‘Abstract Vernacular – Continuing Conversations’, 2025.

On 18th January 2025 TSM hosted a public discussion event for ‘Abstract Vernacular – Continuing Conversations’ at Sugar House Island.

The event was well attended despite the cold weather. Eminent curator and writer Natalie Rudd  chaired the discussion with immense deftness; capturing exactly the tone we wanted of rigorous yet accessible discussion which allowed the audience to contribute as well as the artists. The event felt like a safe space for everyone to talk about their experiences and share their ideas. It certainly opened up areas of discussion that we will continue in the future which is just what we wanted it to do.  The exhibiting artists were organised into three panels, each of which covered a different theme.

Panel 1: Defining Abstraction
Gillian Brent, Beatrice Galletley, Ellen Ranson

Panel 2: Aspects of Vulnerability and Flux
Jackie Askew, Katrina Cowling, Alexandra Harley

Panel 3: Communications and Connections
Charlotte Cullen, Sheila Volmer

We do not have a sound recording of this event but we do have a transcript of the discussion between Natalie and the artists.
